Commonwealth supported places
A Commonwealth supported place (CSP) is an enrolment at the University which is subsidised by the Commonwealth government. The number of CSPs offered is determined by the Government on an annual basis.
The Government sets a maximum limit on how much the University can require a student to contribute for a CSP. That limit depends on the degree enrolled in and the subjects chosen. For the Bachelor of Commerce, yearly student contributions for 2008 are typically AUD $8,499.
Students who accept a Commonwealth supported place do not have to pay their contribution fees immediately – the Government will lend the money. Students repay their loan through the tax system once their income is above the minimum threshold for compulsory repayment ($38,148 in 2007). This loan is known as HECS-HELP.
How to apply - Semester 1 intake
- Read the VTAC Guide 2009 carefully before applying in order to understand the course requirements and application procedures. The VTAC Guide 2008 is available from late July in major newsagencies throughout Australia. Alternatively, see the VTAC website.
- Apply through VTAC. Year 12 students apply via the VTAC website.
VTAC acts on behalf of participating universities and other tertiary institutions to facilitate and co-ordinate the selection system. Although VTAC processes the applications, universities are responsible for selecting students. - Choose course preferences. The application process allows students to apply for up to twelve courses in total. Australian students can only apply for Commonwealth supported places.
To secure a place in the Bachelor of Commerce at Melbourne, put Bachelor of Commerce – Commonwealth Supported as the first CSP preference.
The University of Melbourne makes very few second-round or late offers, so students should not take the risk of missing out on a Melbourne Bachelor of Commerce offer by placing another Commonwealth supported course higher than the Bachelor of Commerce at Melbourne on their application form.

Australian students seeking entry to the Bachelor of Commerce in semester 2 need to apply directly to the University.
All applicants, including Australian students who wish to transfer to the University of Melbourne from another institution and current University of Melbourne students who wish to transfer to another course within the University (internal transfer) should apply online.
