Breadth sequences
There a number of specific sequences of subjects available to Bachelor of Commerce students. You should check the Course and Subject Handbook to find out a comprehensive list of first year subjects available to BCom students.
These sequences are only a small number of the range of subjects available as breadth .
There are no rules about what breadth subjects a student should study. All students will have the opportunity to seek individual course advice throughout their degree to help them make the right decision for them.

Education subjects
The Melbourne Graduate School of Education has developed 13 adventurous breadth subjects - four sequences and a single subject - for students enrolling in any of the University's New Generation degrees in 2008.
You can choose single subjects at each year level or follow through a three-year sequence for the duration of your course. Each of these subjects will count as 12.5 points towards the 75 points of 'Breadth' subjects you will need to complete your degree.
Engineering sequences leading to Master of Engineering
Bachelor of Commerce students may choose one of the approved engineering sequences, and study between eight and ten engineering subjects as the breadth component of their degree. These sequences are the approved pathway to the professionally accredited, two year Master of Engineering. The following engineering streams are available to study in the Bachelor of Commerce:
- Bioengineering systems
- Chemical systems
- Civil systems
- Electrical systems
- Software systems
- Mechanical systems
Due to the very specific engineering subject sequence required, students will need to choose the required engineering subjects from the beginning of their degree. Commerce students pursuing professional accreditation in accounting or actuarial studies cannot complete the approved engineering subject sequence due to the subject requirements of their chosen discipline.
Information systems and informatics sequences
Bachelor of Commerce students may choose the approved Information Systems sequences, studying up to seven information systems subjects as the breadth component of their degree. Two approved Informatics sequences are offered, either the Science Informatics sequence or the Organisational Information Systems sequence.
Music subjects
Choose from a wide range of subjects suitable for students with little or no music literacy to subjects requiring music literacy, as well as ensembles, some of which may require an audition.
Psychology sequence (APAC accredited)
Choose to study psychology as individual subjects or a 125-point accredited sequence (ten subjects, two of which are from the core program). Students who complete the 125-point psychology sequence are eligible to apply for the Postgraduate Diploma in Psychology and subsequent further study, leading to professional practice. Psychology is a useful complementary discipline for students majoring in marketing, especially consumer behaviour.
