Management students put their ideas to Sony Ericsson executives via live video link to Sweden

Not every day do students in the Faculty of Economics and Commerce have the opportunity to put their ideas on management to executives of major international companies. Students of the subject Managing in Contemporary Organisations did just that recently when they presented their thoughts on how Sony Ericsson could create an optimal virtual organisation to an expert panel live via a video link to Sweden.

Two commerce students to attend Dragon 100 Study Tour

Congratulations to Cecilia Chan and Benjamin Ng, two students from the Faculty of Economics and Commerce who have been selected to take part in the Dragon 100 Study Tour of 2007. They were selected from among hundreds of nominations submitted to the Dragon Foundation from all over the world – truly a great achievement.

Since 2000, the Dragon Foundation has run the Dragon 100 Young Chinese Leaders Forum. This forum consists of an eight day program, where selected delegates meet with eminent people in China, and undertake a study tour.

In 2007 the forum “Finding Footprints of the Dragon: Chinese Culture and Life of Chinese People” is focused on promoting Chinese culture and heritage in a commitment towards a harmonious world. Through the program, the Dragon Foundation facilitates networks among Chinese youth worldwide, and encourages their creativity and participation in community building. The Study Tour will take place in Hong Kong and Henan, China.

The delegates are selected through nominations received from Chinese organisations, corporations and universities. Participants are selected for their demonstrated outstanding leadership skills, excellent academic and non-academic achievements and strong commitment to the community.

The Faculty is very proud of Cecilia and Ben, and in recognition of their achievement, is pleased to sponsor their study tour with a $500 contribution each.

Students in Free Enterprise win national competition

The University of Melbourne Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) team has won the national SIFE competition and will go to New York to compete internationally.

The team also won three of the six individual project awards – Best Competitive Skills Training Project; Best Ethical Business practice project and Best Team Sustainability Strategy.

The national SIFE competition is judged by CEOs of some of Australia’s largest companies. The competition was held at the Hilton Hotel in Melbourne, 6-8 July.

The University of Melbourne SIFE team presented five projects designed to have a positive economic and social impact on a broad range of groups in need.  The students represent six faculties and their projects reflect the multi-disciplinary approach taken.

One impressive project called “Community Voicemail” is a project developed in conjunction with Cisco Systems and equips homeless people with free individual voicemail services so that they have a point of contact to communicate with welfare agencies, housing organizations, potential employers, friends and family.  The project is being tested with 100 Big Issue vendors.

Another project called “EnabledInitiatives” channels the interests and strengths of Yooralla’s disabled members into entrepreneurial ventures.  The team provides a learning framework and resource, provides business skill workshops and support for Yooralla members.
The students contributing to these projects demonstrate a real commitment to community engagement, and their work represents knowledge transfer at its finest.

The SIFE team was led by University staff advisors, including Suzanne Dixon, Director of Advancement for the Faculty of Economics and Commerce, and Dr. Leisa Sargent, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Management and Marketing.
